Netzero Updates - April 2026

This is the first in a series of updates covering new Netzero features, Powerwall firmware observations, and user-reported issues. You can subscribe to email updates in the Netzero app: Settings > Preferences. We will send up to one update per month.

New in the 2.4 release

Powerwall Pairing

A new Powerwall Pairing option is available in Settings for Netzero subscribers. Pairing establishes a secure connection between the Netzero app and your Powerwall, and enables advanced features like Go Off-Grid automations and Local Monitoring.

To pair, go to Settings > Powerwall Pairing and follow the instructions. You will need to physically toggle the switch on your Powerwall to confirm the pairing.

Go Off-Grid Automations

Once your Powerwall is paired with Netzero, you will see new automation actions under Off-grid control: Go off-grid and Reconnect to the grid. These automations can help with certain utility rate plans:

  1. If your utility has negative export pricing, you can go off-grid to avoid export penalties. Reconnect to the grid once prices are no longer negative.
  2. If your utility has demand charges, go off-grid to avoid imports during demand-charge windows. Reconnect to the grid once the window ends.

Simpler Diagnostics

Diagnostic data for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems is now much simpler to access – no need to connect to the Powerwall Wi-Fi or hunt for passwords. This also makes diagnostics work when you’re away from home or using the web app.

Diagnostics include battery capacity and degradation tracking, as well as solar string production (solar output broken down by individual strings of panels). These diagnostics can help you monitor system health, track performance over time, and identify potential production issues.

This change also includes better alerting for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems.

Diagnostic data is displayed in the Powerwall and Strings tabs under Monitoring. For details, see Powerwall Diagnostics.

Other Changes

Note: Powerwall pairing, off-grid automations, and diagnostics require a Netzero subscription.

Powerwall Firmware Updates

Powerwall firmware updates are managed and deployed by Tesla – we have no control over their timing or content. The latest observed firmware versions as of early April 2026 are 26.10.1 for Powerwall 3 and 26.10.0 for Powerwall 2. For detailed tracking data, see Powerwall Firmware Versions.

Delayed Powerwall Charging (Optimized Charging)

A notable recent change in Powerwall behavior (introduced by Tesla via a firmware update) is delayed charging from solar. When charging from solar, Powerwall will stop at around 80% (exporting excess solar to the grid), and top off to 100% later in the day. The goal is to reduce how much time Powerwall spends at 100% state of charge, which improves long-term battery health. When this is active, you will see an Optimized Charging message in the Tesla app.

This change may interfere with Charge on Solar settings in Netzero – if Charge on Solar is configured to start after Powerwall reaches 100%, delayed charging past 80% may not leave enough time for solar charging. We’re considering ways to address this, but in the meantime consider reducing the Charge on Solar threshold to 80% Powerwall state of charge.

Issues with Wired and Wi-Fi networking

We’ve received several reports of Powerwall ignoring configuration changes from the Tesla or Netzero apps. In most cases, the Powerwall had both wired and Wi-Fi networks active, which recent firmware versions don’t handle well.

The fix is to keep only one network active. You can block the Wi-Fi network at your access point (the Tesla app doesn’t offer a way to forget a Wi-Fi network), or unplug the wired connection. If you choose Wi-Fi only, make sure you have good signal – a wired connection is more reliable. You can check which networks are active under Monitoring > Powerwall.
